The story of Carnevale di Venezia begins in 1162, when the Republic of Venice – known as La Serenissima, "The Most Serene" – celebrated a military victory with spontaneous gatherings in Piazza San Marco. What started as a celebration evolved into one of the world's most enchanting traditions, reaching its golden age during the Renaissance when festivities stretched for weeks and the entire city became a stage.
